Common Questions
What campers most often want to know about Avalanche Campground.
Do I need a permit to camp at Avalanche Campground?
No, Avalanche doesn't require a permit, but every one of its 84 sites must be booked in advance through Recreation.gov. Walk-up or same-day camping without a reservation isn't an option here.
How far ahead can I reserve a site?
Most sites at Avalanche open on a 6-month rolling booking window. A smaller number of sites are held back on a 4-day window instead, which can be a good option if your travel dates are more flexible or last-minute.
Can I bring my RV or trailer?
Yes, Avalanche accepts tents, RVs, and trailers, but rig size matters here. Only 50 of the 84 total sites can fit vehicles up to 26 feet, so double-check the site details before booking if you're driving anything larger than a standard car or small camper.
Are there accessible campsites at Avalanche?
Yes, 2 of the 84 sites are ADA-accessible. All sites at the campground are standard sites rather than group or specialty setups.
What hikes or attractions are near the campground?
Avalanche sits along Going-to-the-Sun Road on the west side of the Continental Divide, right at the trailhead area shared by the Trail of the Cedars and the Avalanche Lake Trail. The Trail of the Cedars is a short boardwalk loop through old-growth forest, while the Avalanche Lake Trail continues on to a mountain lake for those wanting a longer hike.
Why do sites at Avalanche disappear so fast, and how can Open Canyon help?
Avalanche is one of the most in-demand campgrounds in Glacier National Park, so its 6-month booking window tends to fill quickly once dates open up. Open Canyon watches for cancellations and newly released sites at Avalanche so you can grab an opening even after the campground shows as fully booked.
